The CAP Barbell 110 lb weight set is designed to provide everything you need to get started with resistance workouts from home. Part of CAP’s highly popular barbell range, not only do you get the barbell and dumbbell bars, but also 85 lb of standard size weight plates to load them with.
This review takes a look at the set in more detail, including the exercise options, customer reviews, and how this set can help you get bigger and stronger from the convenience of your own home gym.
Design features
Whether you’re looking to upgrade your current free weights setup, or putting together your first home gym, the CAP Barbell 110 lb weight set has everything you need to perform the most effective upper and lower body exercises.
Although this is a standard design feature across most dumbbells and barbells, it’s important to take into account the spin-lock collars used to secure the weight plates.
While these will certainly help to keep the weight plates secure on the bar, it might also be worth thinking about buying a set of spring collars if you don’t already have a pair.
These will help to change the weight plates much quicker, allowing you to make better use of your workout time.
In terms of grip, the dumbbell handles and barbell offer two very different options. Knurling has been applied to the barbell, while a rubber coating has been applied to the handle of the dumbbells.
Both are designed to improve your grip on the bar, helping you to complete more reps and sets with a given weight.
CAP Barbell 110 lb Weight Set – Features Summary

- Includes 5′ standard bar and 2 x standard dumbbell handles
- 30 Day Warranty
Additional weight plates available
When we took a look at the weight plate breakdown, we noticed that the maximum size supplied with the set weighs 10 lb.
To help put this into perspective, most commercial gyms stock up on 45 lb plates for use on the full sized barbells and Olympic bars. These are the plates you see most of the time in bodybuilding videos or larger machines, such as the leg press.
While the 10 lb plates will be useful for both the dumbbell handles and barbell, they probably won’t be enough to challenge your strength level for long if you want to perform overhead presses or shrugs.
The good things is that even though the CAP Barbell 110 lb weight set does come with its own weight plates, the bars are still all compatible with any other standard sized plates.
This means that as soon as your strength level does go beyond what this set provides, you only need to buy a few additional plates, instead of replacing the entire set.
Exercise options
Although there are other types of barbell available, the straight bar and dumbbell combination should provide enough exercise options to build strength and muscle in all the major muscle groups.
There will of course be more exercises you can perform when you combine the CAP Barbell 110 lb weight set with a workout bench, but you may be limited to benches with a barbell rack built into the frame.
Alternatively, you can find a set of free standing squat stands and use these to support the bar, but most squat racks and cages simply won’t be suitable for a 5ft barbell.
The following list of exercises are a few of the most popular and effective options for home workouts:
- Barbell curl
- Overhead press
- Hammer curls
- Concentration curls
- Overhead tricep extensions
- Barbell rows
Customer reviews
Whether you’re planning on spending $70 or $700, it’s important to find out as much information about the product as you can before you buy.
This is even more important if you can’t try the weight set out before you buy.
One of the best places to find honest information on the positives and negatives of the CAP Barbell 110 lb weight set is in the customer reviews section of most online retailers.
With Amazon alone currently featuring over 30 of these reviews, we wanted to provide a quick summary of the pros and cons in the lists below.
Pros:
- 200 lb weight capacity on the barbell
- Threading and spin-lock collars hold weight plates securely in place for additional safety when lifting at home
- 5ft bar is much more compact than the full 7ft Olympic versions, making it ideal for smaller spaces
- Small denominations of weight plates allow you to slowly increase the weight for gradual, but consistent strength gains
- Durable coating applied to the weight plates and bars to prevent rust and scratches
Cons:
- It was actually difficult to find any negative points regarding the quality of this set.
Most lower rated reviews are from customers who didn’t read the full product description, and expected a longer bar.
Either that, or for the weight set to provide 110 lb of weight plates, without realising that the 110 lb also takes into account bar weights.
Review Overview
Overall Review Rating
4 / 5
If you're looking to buy a high quality starter weights set for resistance workouts at home, this set by CAP Barbell is ideal.
The cast iron weight plates and solid steel bars take up less space and are less prone to damage or scratches than the rubber coated or concrete encase designs, which also helps provide a more balanced weight distribution.
The rubber coated grip on the dumbbell handles will not only improve your grip on the bar, but also protect your hands during heavier exercises, such as dumbbell rows.
If you're thinking of buying this set for use with an existing barbell rack or bench at home, just make sure it's compatible with 5ft bars and isn't a fixed width Olympic design before buying.
