Being one of the best known names in the bodybuilding and fitness industry, Weider are certainly one of the best known companies to start producing adjustable dumbbell sets for home gyms.

After taking a more detailed look at a few similar sets, we felt it would be useful if we put together a detailed review of the Weider SpeedWeight dumbbell range.

The following review takes a look at the overall design features, exercise options, and features of the training DVD, as well as making various comparisons with similar sets along the way.

Weight plate adjustment and increments

Weider SpeedWeight Adjustable Dumbbells

One of the reasons behind the naming of the ‘SpeedWeight’ is how quickly you can adjust the weight setting using the interior dial adjustment.

Using an interior selector mechanism to pick up and release the weight plates needed for specific weights is possible by simply rotating the handle.

There’s no need to worry about any external plastic selector pins being damaged with the Weider SpeedWeight dumbbells, with everything being kept as compact and safe as possible.

It’s this quick select technology that quickly differentiates the SpeedWeight sets from either the Gold’s Gym or Bowflex adjustable dumbbells.

As you rotate the handle, each setting is clearly labelled so you always know how much weight you have selected.

While most dumbbell storage trays are often used for simply holding the dumbbells and weight plates that aren’t being used, Weider have built-in an extra safety feature.

This comes in the form of two pins in each tray, which need to engage with the handle of the dumbbell before it will rotate. This prevents any plates from coming loose while you lift, and ensures that plates are fully attached before you remove the dumbbell from the stand.

Comfortable handle design

Weider SpeedWeight Adjustable Dumbbells

Second only to the weight selection system in terms of importance is the handle design. If the dumbbells aren’t comfortable to grip and easy to pick up, then the chances are they won’t get used very often.

Each of the Weider SpeedWeight sets provides the same high quality handle design, coating the cast iron bar with a rubber cushion to make them more comfortable to hold.

There’s even an audible click when the weight plates are locked in place, helping to prevent injury and acting as useful indicator that you have moved onto the next weight setting.

Although these sets don’t provide the same level of ergonomic design when it comes to the shape of the handle, they do feel quite similar to the Stairmaster TwistLock set.

Despite not providing the same high quality stand as Weider, the TwistLock dumbbells are a lot more compact due to the lack of protective coating around the plates.

If you’re at all worried about the Weider SpeedWeight sets restricting your range of motion, the Stairmaster set is certainly worth a look.

Free workout DVD

In addition to the high quality adjustable dumbbell set and stand, you also get a free workout DVD to give you some useful exercise inspiration.

The Weider SpeedWeight 100 set is actually the only one in the SpeedWeight range to include this training DVD, which has been designed around 3 specific training goals.

  • Phase 1 – Increasing endurance
  • Phase 2 – Improving your strength
  • Phase 3 – Combining strength and power

Each phase includes workout guides created by a certified personal trainer to make sure you complete each exercise safely and efficiently.

All 3 feature a chest, back and core workout and a shoulders, arms and legs workout to targets different muscle groups for a total-body transformation.

Dumbbell sizes available

Weider SpeedWeight Adjustable Dumbbells

If you’re wondering about the different weight plate thickness, each of the Weider SpeedWeight dumbbells includes 3 types of plate; one for 10 lb, one for 5 lb, and one for 2.5 lb.

The combination of weight plates you can expect to receive with your SpeedWeight dumbbell set will vary, depending on the specific model you choose.

With the SpeedWeight 100 set falling between the SpeedWeight 90 and SpeedWeight 120 designs, you manage to get the best of both worlds.

You get the higher maximum weight limit, but without resulting in too much extra length being added to each of the handles.

Dumbbell storage stand

Weider SpeedWeight Adjustable Dumbbells

As part of the Weider SpeedWeight 100 package, you’ll also receive a high quality dumbbell storage stand.

This is a major improvement over the standard dumbbell trays alone, as you no longer have to worry about finding a platform to keep the weights in easy reach.

There’s no need to worry about bending down to pick up heavy dumbbells before starting each set either, helping to maximise the amount of rest you give your muscles, as well as reducing unnecessary lower back strain.

Although not as compact as some adjustable dumbbell stands, having the extra space between the dumbbells lets you walk right up and lift the weights from a natural standing position.

This also makes it much easier to return the weights to the stand, giving you some extra time to make sure those all important locking pins are engaged in the storage trays.

Customer reviews and comparison

Now that we’ve taken a look at the Weider SpeedWeight dumbbells in more detail, it’s time to see just what other people think. One of the best resources for customer reviews and getting answers to any questions you might have continues to be Amazon.

With dozens of reviews currently available across the 90, 100, and 120 sets, it’s an excellent place to find out what people love about the dumbbells, but also what they’re not too keen on.

Of course we would always recommend reading through the reviews in full, but we’ve also put together some lists of pros and cons to help provide a quick summary of what people liked and disliked.

Pros:

  • Excellent for P90X
  • Effortless weight changing design
  • The SpeedWeight 100’s are lower priced than the Bowflex SelectTech 552’s, even with the stand
  • High quality stand and training DVD improves the speed and effectiveness of your workouts
  • No issues with weight plates detaching from the bars
  • Quick and simple assembly
  • Provides a wide range of exercise options, particularly when combined with a high quality weights bench

Cons:

  • Longer than adjustable dumbbells with a similar weight
  • The minimum weight of 15 lb might not be suitable for someone brand new to fitness workouts (SpeedWeight 90 set has a 10 lb minimum setting)
  • A small number of customers (2) reported difficulty in attaching the storage trays to the rack, which led to a 3 star rating, instead of 4 or 5.

Review Overview

Overall Review Rating

4.5 / 5

With such a wide range of weight settings, the Weider SpeedWeight 100 dumbbells provide the equivalent workout options as 8 traditional fixed weight sets.

As well as the obvious space saving benefits, you're also saving potentially hundreds of dollars compared to buying these 8 sets separately.

With the minimum weight for each dumbbell being 15 lb, these are likely meant as more of an intermediate set, compared to the 90's which offer the 10 lb starting weight.

When you combine the high average customer review rating with the fact that you get an adjustable dumbbell set, training DVD and high quality stand for less than $300, this certainly looks to be a sensible investment for anyone serious about their home workouts.
