Currently one of the best weight benches available due to its quality, versatility, and price, the Marcy SB670 Adjustable Utility Bench includes a number of different design features to help make your home workouts more effective.

Design features

Marcy SB670 Adjustable Utility Bench

Being one of the most popular items of fitness equipment in home gyms across the country, having access to an adjustable weights bench has become an important part of a successful workout.

While it’s certainly possible to create an entire workout routine without one, there’s no escaping the fact that they have proven to be an invaluable resource for reaching optimal strength and size gains.

This is part of the reason why the Marcy SB670 is such a popular product on shopping sites such as Amazon, where you can find dozens of highly rated customer reviews.

Taking a look at the design, the back support is adjustable through 6 different settings, ranging from decline all the way through to almost vertical.

This helps to extend the number of exercise possibilities, making it suitable for everything from decline pec flys to Arnold presses.

Aside from the back support adjustments, the angle of the seat can also be raised and lowered to provide better support when performing exercises at an incline.

Although there is no leg developer for increasing the variety of lower body exercises available, Marcy have included a useful handle and transport wheels to make it easier to transport or store away between workouts.

Product comparison

Marcy SB670 Adjustable Utility Bench

To make sure that the Marcy SB670 is the best choice for your own workout requirements and budget, it can be useful to compare it with a few other benches in the same price range.

Often available for around $100, this gives you plenty of options to compare it with.

But in terms of comparing benches with a few different features, it might be worth starting with the Universal Five-Position weight bench and the marginally higher priced Bowflex SelectTech 3.1.

Taking a look at the Universal bench, although the maximum incline may be limited to 45 degrees, it does include a set of foam rollers to slide your ankles behind as support during decline exercises.

In terms of the Bowflex bench, this also comes with the removable leg hold-down brace for added decline position support, but this version is removable rather than fixed.

The variety of positions is actually very similar between the Bowflex and the Marcy SB670, but with the Marcy version providing 6 settings compared to the Bowflex’s 4.

One final comparison worth making is the strength, with both the Bowflex and the Marcy benches having a maximum weight capacity of 300 lbs.

Exercise options

Designed primarily to support dumbbell workouts, the transport wheels also allow you to easily slide the Marcy SB670 into a smith machine or power rack if required.

When combined with even a very limited collection of dumbbells, this is a bench that can support a wide variety of upper body exercises that target all major muscle groups.

This includes:

  • Seated dumbbell curls
  • Dumbbell rows
  • Incline dumbbell press
  • Seated concentration curl
  • Standing preacher curl

  • Decline pec flys
  • Pullovers
  • Lying tricep extensions
  • Arnold presses
  • Tricep kickbacks

Customer reviews

Despite being priced in such a competitive range for weights benches, the Marcy SB670 still has dozens of highly rated reviews to read through.

While the vast majority are highly rated at 4 or the full 5 stars, it’s also important to take into account any issues repeated throughout the handful of lower rated reviews.

After reading through the product reviews currently on Amazon, we were able to put together the following summary of the pros and cons about owning this bench, from other people who have bought and used it.

Pros:

  • Useful number of incline settings
  • Easy to follow assembly instructions makes the initial setup straightforward
  • High level of stability
  • Easy to move around using the attached transport handle
  • Thick, comfortable padding
  • Excellent value for money
  • Doesn’t take up as much space as some of the larger FID designs

Cons:

  • While the product description does mention that the Marcy SB670 has a decline setting, with no padded rollers to wrap your legs around this can make it difficult to remain stationary during the exercise
  • A couple of customers found the seat welds were not as neat as they could be, resulting in using smaller steel bolts for the seat assembly

Review Overview

Overall Review Rating

4 / 5

While the Marcy SB670 Adjustable Bench is inevitably competing with the Bowflex SelectTech 3.1 due to its price and features, it actually matches up extremely well.

The adjustable back support and seat can be set to all the positions you are likely to need in your workouts, supporting a full range of upper body exercises.

As well as being functionally effective and comfortable thanks to the thick padding, the transport wheels and handle grip make it much easier to move if required.

When you combine this with the high weight capacity for a bench at this price point and the large number of highly rated customer reviews, what you have is a bench that would make an excellent addition to almost any home gym.
