Schiff Glucosamine is a beneficial supplement for anyone looking to relieve and reduce the likelihood of joint pain, which is typically found in the knees, hips, and hands.

But how does the combination of Glucosamine Hydrochloride (2000mg) and Hyaluronic Acid (3.3mg) differ from any other glucosamine supplement, and are tablets the most effective delivery method?

In this review we’ll look at the science behind the ingredients, as well as the health benefits you can expect from adding a 2-tablet serving to your daily routine. This includes important comparisons between the tablets from Schiff and two other top-rated glucosamine supplements; Doctor’s Best Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM, and Kirkland Signature Extra Strength Glucosamine HCI.

Schiff Glucosamine Ingredients

Schiff Glucosamine Ingredients

Schiff Glucosamine 2000 mg is a glucosamine supplement combined with 3.3 mg of hyaluronic acid, with no added MSM or chondroitin sulfate. However, glucosamine hydrochloride (HCL) has been used, which isn’t backed by as much scientific evidence as glucosamine sulfate.

Several small scale studies are available that show promising results, including one published in the Chinese Journal of Surgery. The goal of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of glucosamine HCL for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

Two groups were formed from 143 patients suffering from knee or hip osteoarthritis. One group supplemented with glucosamine sulfate, and the other with glucosamine HCL.

After 6 weeks, treatment with glucosamine HCL was found to be better than treatment with glucosamine sulfate, with an effective rate of 75.4% compared to 60.6%.

Unfortunately both forms of glucosamine contain shellfish, so they’re not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. Glucosamine HCL is available in vegetarian form, but it’s often derived from corn rather than shellfish.

The DEVA Vegan Glucosamine supplement is certified by the Vegan Society, and currently has hundreds of positive reviews on Amazon. Each serving also includes 100 mg of boswelia extract, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory benefits.

However, Schiff Glucosamine is more expensive than Doctor’s Best Glucosamine. The Doctor’s Best product contains glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, and MSM, so does Schiff really represent good value for money?

Allergen warning: contains soy and shellfish (shrimp, crab, lobster and crayfish)

Review Overview

Overall Review Rating

4 / 5

Clinical studies have shown glucosamine to be an effective treatment for moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis. The majority of these studies recommend 1,500 mg per day, split across up to 3 servings. Schiff Glucosamine provides you with 2,000 mg, which is considerably higher than most joint health supplements. Unfortunately, even with higher doses, there aren’t many studies proving glucosamine HCL actually works. Arthritis Research, based in the UK, quotes two trials where 1,500 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride was measured against the effects of a placebo. Results showed no significant improvement over the placebo group for reducing pain, stiffness, and physical function. The cost per serving is also quite high, even though it also includes hyaluronic acid (HA). In comparison, Kirkland Signature combined their glucosamine with 1,500 mg of MSM and still managed to keep the cost down to around half of what you’ll pay for Schiff Glucosamine 2,000 mg.
