Nordic Naturals Omega-3 softgels provide you with a total of 690 mg of Omega-3 fatty acids; 330 mg of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic), 220 mg of DHA (Docosahexaenoic), and 140 mg of other Omega-3s. This is designed to improve cognition, heart health, and immune support, using a super triglyceride form to increase absorption.
But despite surpassing the daily recommended minimum of 500 mg EPA and DHA, you’re still getting half the dose that you get with Dr. Tobias Omega-3, which has the added benefit of 2,000 mg fish oil.
So do the Nordic Naturals softgels really represent good value for money?
In this review we’ll be comparing Nordic Naturals to two other top-rated omega-3 supplements; Now Foods Ultra Omega-3, and Dr. Tobias Optimum Omega-3. This includes the ingredients, dosages of EPA/ADA/DHA, price, cost per serving, and customer feedback, to guarantee you only buy the best Omega-3 for your current diet and health routine.
Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Ingredients
Nordic Naturals derive their fish oil from anchovies and sardines, with 1000 mg per serving. This contains 690 mg of omega-3 fatty acids, 550 mg of which is long-chain EPA or DHA.
But is this a high enough dose to see real health benefits? Dr. Tobias Omega-3 provides you with 1400 mg per serving for practically the same price per serving, so which offers better value for money?
The cost per serving can be difficult to pin down, as Nordic Naturals often discount their supplements on Amazon. Although the RRP is close to $60 for a 180-count bottle, we’ve recently seen this as low as $37, which puts the cost per serving closer to $0.41.
However, even at this low price, Dr. Tobias was still much cheaper ($0.31 per serving) for more than twice the dose of omega-3 fatty acids. So in terms of value for money, it seems there’s a clear winner.
The most concentrated food source of EPA and DHA is fatty fish, such as albacore tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines, and herring. Nordic Naturals derives most of its omega-3 from sardines, which has about 1.4% omega-3 oil. In comparison, Dr. Tobias uses a wider range of fish with high-concentration omega-3 oil, such as herring (1.5%) and mackerel (1.8%).
Does Nordic Naturals contain enough EPA and DHA?
The American Heart Association’s Nutrition Committee recommends supplementation with 250 to 500 mg of EPA and DHA per day. This is mainly for the prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD), but also to boost the overall health of your cardiovascular system.
Beyond this it’s difficult to find conclusive evidence of a ‘perfect dose’. Numerous clinical studies have compared high and low-dose omega-3 supplementation, but they tend to test the impact on different health problems.
One example is a pilot study of high-dose EPA/DHA concentrates on children with ADHD. After 8 weeks of taking 16.2 g per day (16,200 mg), a psychiatrist reported significant improvements in behavior, with reductions in hyperactivity and improved attention span.

What sizes are available?
With a serving size of 2 capsules, each bottle provides you with either 30, 60, or 90 servings. Based on a recommended dose of 2 capsules per day, this is enough to last approx. 1 month, 2 months, or 3 months.
At the time of writing this review, the best value for money comes from the bottle containing 180 softgels. Each serving was priced at $0.67, compared to $0.80 per serving with the smallest bottle of 60 softgels. This is why we always recommend calculating the average cost per serving, across all sizes, before making a final buying decision.
