Innovo Deluxe Fingertip Pulse Oximeter with Plethysmograph Review

The Innovo Deluxe Fingertip Pulse Oximeter measures SpO2 and pulse rate in 10 seconds, has a 40-hour battery life, plethysmograph, and over 950 reviews on Amazon.

Accurately monitoring your blood oxygen levels using pulse oximetry can be useful for a range of physical activities, such as hiking or cycling.

But how accurate is the Innovo Deluxe Oximeter, and is it worth buying?

In this review, we’ll guide you through the design features, customer feedback, warranty coverage, and how to achieve the most accurate readings.

We’ve also included comparisons with similar devices, to help you decide if this is the best pulse oximeter for you.

Design Features

Innovo Deluxe Fingertip Pulse Oximeter

The Innovo Deluxe features similar features to the Zacurate 500D oximeter, but without the automatic power-off and is usually the more expensive of the two devices.

The display is multi-directional, with 6 easy-to-read layouts. This makes the results easy to view, whether you’re taking the reading yourself, or having the reading taken for you by a caregiver.

In addition to the standard Sp02 and pulse rate feedback, the OLED screen also includes an indicator for the battery level, plethysmograph, and perfusion index (PI). The pleth waveform and PI are both useful indicators that can dramatically improve the accuracy of your pulse oximetry readings.

Each wave in the pleth corresponds to a heartbeat and the amplitude to the amount of blood detected in your blood vessels. This means you can wait until the waveform creates an even pattern to avoid taking a reading during a spike in your heart rate.

The Innovo Deluxe Oximeter (IP900AP) is also one of only a few devices to offer an audible alarm for when your Sp02 and pulse rate exceed upper and lower limits, which you can configure. (Two other oximeters that offer the same type of alarm feature are the Vive Precision and Zacurate 500D)

For convenience, Innovo have also included a lanyard, which allows you to wear the device around your neck if you need to take readings throughout the day. Unfortunately they don’t include a carry case, but these can be purchased separately from companies such as Devon Medical, for around $5.

How is it Powered?

The Innovo Deluxe Oximeter is powered by 2 x AAA batteries, which is enough to support up to 40 hours of use. But unlike the Zacurate 500D, there’s no automatic power-off to save battery life. With the 500D this kicks in after 15-20 seconds.

Unfortunately there’s no way to charge via smartphone, AC adapter, or USB cable. Some home pulse oximeters have removed the battery casing altogether and gain their power from connecting to your smartphone.

One such device is the Aupalla Oximeter, which connects to iPhone and Android phones. You can then view your oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and perfusion index via the Aupalla app. But customers have reported problems with connectivity and fluctuating readings, which is why we don’t currently recommend it.

Tips for Accurate Pulse Oximetry

The most common reasons customers gave for lower review ratings on Amazon relate to accuracy.

That’s why we’ve added a quick guide for how to achieve the most accurate Sp02 and pulse readings with the Innovo Deluxe Oximeter:

  1. Ensure batteries are installed correctly
  2. Open the clamp
  3. Insert finger into the clip, with your fingernail facing upwards towards the screen
  4. Ensure your fingertip is directly in between the LED light source and LED sensor
  5. Release the clamp
  6. Press the button on front of the device once
  7. Keep finger and body still while the oximeter is taking its readings

What Should You Avoid?

Poor blood circulation can cause inaccurate or results. Warm your hands and fingers before taking the reading to increase blood flow.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has also advised against wearing nail varnish or allowing bright light to enter the sensor. The color from nail varnish can absorb light from the oximeter and interfere with detection of oxygenated haemoglobin.

Certain medical conditions can also affect the accuracy of pulse oximetry. If you have hypotension, anaemia, tachycardia, hypothermia, or bradycardia, we recommend seeking advice from your physician.

A recent scientific study has shown that the highest Sp02 tends to be in the middle finger of the right hand. Conversely, the lowest is in the middle finger of the left hand, which is why we recommend using the same finger each time.

All Innovo products carry a warranty, but you must register the Deluxe Oximeter within 3 months for this to be valid.

You’ll also need to purchase the device from one of Innovo’s authorized dealers, which are:

  • Innovo Medical
  • Med Shop and Beyond
  • etailz, Inc.

Once the oximeter arrives, you can register for the warranty on the Innovo website.

Who Are Innovo?

The IP900AP Pulse Oximeter is produced by Innovo Medical, a privately-held company located in Stafford, TX.

Their current line of non-prescription medical equipment includes electronic thermometers (forehead, ear, and non-contact), as well as pulse oximeters and nasal aspirators.

What Do Other Reviews Say?

Our own oximeter reviews provide you with in-depth information and comparisons between the best devices.

But it’s also useful to check the feedback from as many people as possible, as not everyone has the same experience.

How easy was it to take a reading? Was customer service helpful and easy to contact? Were the readings accurate, and how comfortable was the fingertip grip?

The problem is, the best oximeters have thousands of reviews, and finding the most valuable information can be time consuming.

That’s why we did the leg work for you.

Listed below you’ll find a summary of the pros and cons for the Innovo Deluxe Oximeter, based on direct customer feedback.

  • More advanced features than most pulse oximeters, including the plethysmograph and perfusion index indicator
  • OLED display is bright and easy to read
  • Can change which direction the results are displayed in, which isn’t an option with oximeters like the FaceLake FL400
  • 10-second automatic power shut off is longer than some devices to give more time to view results, but short enough to save battery life
  • Alarm sound and levels can be changed for pulse rate and oxygen saturation
  • Accuracy compares well to more expensive devices found in hospitals
  • Lightweight – AAA batteries means it weighs less than the devices that use AA
  • Easy to use
  • Lanyard makes the Innovo Oximeter easy to locate and carry
  • Hinge is flexible enough to fit large fingers with accurate results
  • Useful for monitoring oxygen levels with health conditions such as pneumonia, asthma, or COPD

  • The perfusion index feedback can be difficult to read, as the text is so much smaller than pulse rate and Sp02
  • Although batteries are supplied, they tend to have a low life. Recommend replacing them with branded batteries as soon as possible
  • No protective carry case or bag
  • At the time of writing our review, this was one of the more expensive oximeters on the market
Oximeter Buying Guide

Innovo Deluxe Oximeter Review Summary

Overall Review Rating

4.5 / 5

So, is the Innovo Deluxe Oximeter worth buying?

In our opinion, it's one of the best finger pulse oximeters on the market, and ranked top 3 in our recent buying guide.

The price can be a little higher than the Zacurate devices, but that's because this is one of the only oximeters we've seen that includes a perfusion index.

With 6 display modes, the multi-directional screen makes your results easy to read from any angle. Combine this with the audible alerts, plethysmograph, and consistent accuracy, and you have everything you need for reliable pulse oximetry.

We would like to see an extra year on the warranty to bring it up to the level of the Vive Precision Oximeter, but based on the research from our other oximeter reviews, roughly 85% of the market only offers 1 year.

Overall, for a home oximeter, you'll struggle to find more features, better build quality, and higher accuracy than the Innovo Deluxe.
