Vitamin Bounty Pro-50 Probiotic Ingredients

Bifidobacterium bifidum (B. bifidum) is one of the most common strains of probiotic bacteria found in the human body, mostly inhabiting the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. As one of the lactic acid bacteria, B. bifidum can be found in a range of fermented foods, including some yogurts and cheeses. Health benefits include prevention and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), lung infections, constipation, and certain types of diarrhea. Some studies have also found B. bifidum to be beneficial to the immune system.

Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum) is a type of “good” bacteria that’s found naturally in the human gastrointestinal tract, and one of 32 types of bifidobacterium. One study on a specific type of B. longum (strain 1714), found that people who supplemented with it improved their memory function, reported fewer cases of mild anxiety, and had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the morning. Further research shows that B. longum has a powerful effect on boosting your immune system. The lactic acid produced by the bacteria also increases the acidity of the digestive tract, which helps restrict the growth of harmful bacteria.

Lactobacillus brevis (L. brevis) is available in approximately 16 different strains, and commonly found in some milk products and plants as they decompose. As a gram-positive, lactic acid producing bacteria, L. brevis can be found in many foods that are rich in probiotics, including yogurt, sauerkraut, sourdough bread, and a fermented Japanese vegetable called suguki. The probiotic L. brevis has not been the subject of many scientific studies, but it may help treat and prevent diarrhea in children and improve gastrointestinal health when consumed as part of a probiotic supplement.

Review Summary

Overall Review Rating

5 / 5

So, is the Vitamin Bounty Pro-50 probiotic worth buying?

Despite having a smaller product line than companies like Garden of Life and Renew Life, Pro-50 contains a significant quantity of CFU per serving (50 billion). The 13 strains included in each serving have also been carefully selected and are backed by scientific research for their ability to help with a wide range of digestive issues, such as lactose intolerance, IBS, and diarrhoea.

Vitamin Bounty is one of only a few supplement companies who routinely include the S. boulardi probiotic strain in their supplements. Controlled trials support the combination of S. boulardii and L. rhamnosus for the effective treatment of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

Overall, Vitamin Bounty Pro-50 is one of the highest quality probiotics we've reviewed. The fact that the company is based in the U.S. and easily contactable is a bonus.

The only slight downside is that it is one of the more expensive probiotics on the market, priced at just under $1 per day, but this is in-line with the price of Renew Life Ultimate Flora Extra Care, which also contains 50 billion CFU and 12 probiotic strains per serving.
