Each MET-Rx Big 100 Colossal protein bar provides your body with 30 g of protein, 47 g of carbohydrates, 12 g of fat, and 410 calories.
But despite having 50% more protein than most bars, you’re also facing a 400%+ increase in sugar (28 g per bar) compared to bars like MusclePharm Combat Crunch (5 g per bar).
So can the Big 100 protein bars ever replace whey protein powder as a clean pre or post-workout meal? Also, how does the Metamyosyn contained in this recipe compare to more conventional protein bar blends? (whey protein isolate, milk protein isolate)
In this review we’ll compare MET-Rx Big 100 to two other top-rated protein bars; MusclePharm Combat Crunch, and Quest Bars from Quest Nutrition.
Comparisons include the levels of protein, carbs, and fats, as well as the cost per serving, flavors, customer feedback, and total calories.
This is to guarantee you only buy the best protein bar for your current diet and fitness goal. Whether that’s weight loss, lean muscle gain, bulking, or simply to boost your daily protein intake.
MET-Rx Big 100 Colossal Ingredients
As with any protein bar, the precise macronutrient and calorie profile of Big 100 bars varies slightly depending on the flavor. Chocolate Caramel Coconut has 30 g of protein per bar, while Cookie Crunch flavor has 32 g.
The reason they’re called Big 100 bars is because each serving weighs 100 grams. This typically includes around 30 g of protein, 46 g of carbs, 10 g of fat, and 2 g of fiber. But most of these carbs (32 g) are sugars.
So what can you do if you love the high protein content but don’t want the carbs?
There are plenty of low carb protein bars on the market, but none with such a high protein content as MET-Rx Protein Plus Bars.
Each Protein Plus bar contains 32 g of protein (chocolate chocolate chunk flavor), 29 g of carbs, and just 1 g of sugar. That’s a significant reduction compared to their Big 100 bars.
This reduction in carbs also cuts the calories from around 400 per bar, down to 310, making them a better option if weight loss is your goal.
As for the protein blend, MET-Rx use one of the most complex we’ve seen.
Whereas most protein bars contain just one or two types of protein (usually whey protein isolate and either milk protein isolate or soy protein isolate), Big 100 bars contain 6 different types, including casein.
The full Metamyosyn VPP Protein Blend contains calcium caseinate, milk protein concentrate, whey protein hydrolysate, whey protein isolate, casein, whey protein concentrate, dried egg whites, and L-glutamine.

Weight Loss or Weight Gain?
Big 100 protein bars are designed for weight gain, or the support of lean muscle growth and recovery as part of a regular exercise and nutrition program.
Protein bars for weight loss are difficult to find. Your best option is finding a high protein, low calorie, low carb protein bar that helps put your body in a caloric deficit each day. A good example is the Quest Protein Bars, which contain just 6 g of fat, 20 g of protein and as little as 170 calories.
Who Are They Designed for?
MET-Rx have a reputation for bodybuilding supplements and nutrition, but their Big 100 bars can be used by runners, weightlifters, or anyone wanting to increase their protein intake.
When is the Best Time to Take It?
The high carb content of MET-Rx Big 100 protein bars means they’re best suited for pre-workout nutrition, giving you the energy to perform high-intensity resistance or cardio workouts.
You can also enjoy one as a nutritious snack anytime throughout the day. But as a general guide, whether you’re looking to diet or add lean muscle, carb intake should be drastically reduced after 5-7pm.

Who Are MET-Rx?
MET-Rx has been a market leader in sports nutrition for over 20 years. Their reputation has been built on delivering high quality supplements, such as protein bars, RTDs, protein powders, multivitamins, amino acids, and creatine.
Some of the current bestsellers include Natural Whey Protein Powder, Creatine 4200, and the MET-Rx Protein Plus bar, each of which has over 500 highly rated reviews on Amazon.
MET-Rx is also well known for its meal replacement powders (MRPs). The first version required you to mix powder from two canisters; one labelled ‘base’ and their other ‘plus’. This was later released as a single product, where the micellar casein component was removed.
Today, the MET-Rx meal replacement powder remains one of their most popular supplements. Each serving contains 3g of L-Glutamine, 38g of Metamyosyn protein, and more than 6g of BCAAs.
Review Overview
So, are MET-Rx Big 100 Protein Bars worth buying?
If your goal is to bulk up and add muscle, the high calories and carbs, combined with 30g of protein per serving will certainly make it easier. No other protein bar we've seen has more calories.
In terms of price, they're slightly more expensive than most protein bars, but you get what you pay for. The bars themselves are 50% heavier than average, with 50% more protein and twice as many carbs.
At the time of writing, a box of 9 offered the best value for money, costing $19.99 ($2.21 per bar). That was compared to $23.97 for a box of 12 Quest Bars ($2.00 per bar).
To keep this price down, the protein blend contains more protein concentrates and hydrolysates, with less isolates. But the taste is still delicious and the range of flavors is more than you get with Optimum Nutrition Opti-Bars.
Overall, MET-Rx Big 100 Protein Bars are good value for money, with a macro split and calorie count large enough to act as a meal replacement when bulking.
