- 10 Review Overview
Each Promax Protein Bar provides your body with 20 g of protein, 40 g of carbohydrates, 4.5 g of fat, and 270 calories. They’re also packed with 18 vitamins and minerals, including 25% of your RDA for Vitamin A and Vitamin C.
But unlike most protein powders, there’s no creatine, L-glutamine, or BCAAs. So are they an effective source of pre-workout and post-workout nutrition?
Comparisons include the levels of protein, carbs, and fats, as well as the cost per serving, flavors, customer feedback, and total calories.
This is to guarantee you only buy the best protein bar for your current diet and fitness goal. Whether that’s weight loss, lean muscle gain, bulking, or simply to boost your daily protein intake.
Promax Protein Bar Ingredients
As with most protein bars, nutrient levels vary slightly depending on which flavor you prefer. But on average, Promax Protein Bars are considered high-carb, with 37-40 g per serving.
That’s compared to low carb protein bars, like MuscleTech Mission1 Clean Protein Bars, which have 22 g of carbs per serving. This also has a big impact on the calorie count, with Promax bars delivering around 280 calories per serving, compared to just 200 with Mission1.
So what if you need more protein per bar?
There are few protein bars on the market that offer more than 20 g per serving. MET-Rx have a meal replacement bar called Big 100, which has 30 g of protein, but is high carb (46 g) and high in calories (400 per bar).
If you need more protein than 20 g per serving, you’re best option is protein powders or RTDs instead of bars.
In terms of the protein blend, Promax contains a combination of soy protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, and calcium caseinate.
Most protein bars use a combination of protein isolates, as isolates contain approximately 90% pure protein. However, isolates require additional processing, which means a higher cost. That’s why Promax bars balance the more affordable whey concentrate (roughly 80% pure protein) with whey isolates to deliver a high protein bar that’s more affordable than others on the market.
At the time of writing this review, a box of 12 Promax Protein Bars cost $14.79, compared to $24.49 for a box of 12 MuscleTech Mission1 bars, which have just 1 g more protein, 18 g less carbs, and 80 less calories.

Weight loss or weight gain?
Promax Protein Bars are designed to assist with the support of lean muscle growth and recovery, as part of a regular exercise and nutrition program.
Protein bars for weight loss are difficult to find. Your best option is finding a high protein, low calorie, low carb protein bar that helps put your body in a caloric deficit each day. Quest Protein Bars are an excellent example. They contain just 6 g of fat, 20 g of protein and as few as 170 calories.
For weight gain, you’ll need to consume sufficient protein and enough calories from healthy foods to put your body in a daily caloric surplus. This is where Promax Protein Bars would be a better choice.
If you need more calories and don’t mind the extra carbs, MET-Rx Big 100 bars are an excellent option (30 g protein, 47g carbs, 400 cals).
Who are they designed for?
Runners, weightlifters, athletes, or anyone looking for a quick and easy way to increase their protein intake.
When is the best time to take it?
The high carb content of Promax Protein Bars means they’re ideal for pre-workout nutrition, or as mid-morning/mid-afternoon snacks.
You can also enjoy one as a nutritious snack anytime throughout the day. But as a general guide, whether you’re looking to diet or add lean muscle, carb intake should be drastically reduced after 5-7pm.

What flavors and sizes are available?

At the time of writing this review, the best value for money actually comes from the Cookies & Cream flavor, which also has the lowest fat and calorie content. Each bar was priced at $1.23 per serving, compared to $1.33 for Lemon Bar flavor. That’s why we always recommend calculating the average cost per serving, across all flavors and sizes, before making a final buying decision.

Who are Promax?
Since 1996, Promax have been one of the market leaders in high protein energy bars. The original protein bar product line has since expanded to include Promax Lower Sugar, which use the stevia sweetener in their recipe to keep the sugar level low.
Promax Protein Bars are best for anyone that’s looking to either bulk up with lean muscle, or fuel a lifestyle that includes a lot of physical activity.
That’s because their bars are made with a 2:1 carbs to protein ratio, in contrast to the more traditional 1:1 ratio followed by companies like Optimum Nutrition (Opti-Bars) and MuscleTech (Mission1 Clean).
