Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydrowhey provides you with 30 g of protein, 2 g of carbohydrates, 1 g of fat, and 140 calories per serving, together with micronized branched chain amino acids (L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-Valine). This helps to stimulate protein synthesis, reduce the onset of muscle fatigue, and boost recovery after a workout.

So how are the hydrolyzed whey protein isolates different from whey protein concentrate, and which is best for supporting an active lifestyle?

In this review we compare Platinum Hydrowhey to two other top-rated whey protein powders; Jarrow Formulas Whey Protein, and Isopure Whey Protein Isolate. This includes the flavors, size options, ingredients, price, cost per serving, and customer feedback, to help you find the best whey protein supplement to support your fitness goals.

We’ve also added recommendations for creating a supplement stack that combines Platinum Hydrowhey with pre-workout, creatine, and glutamine supplements. These have been designed for bodybuilding, powerlifting, CrossFit, and general fitness, to maximize performance, recovery, strength, and endurance.

O.N. Platinum Hydrowhey Ingredients

Platinum Hydrowhey Ingredients

Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydrowhey is a fast-digesting protein powder, with more protein per serving than their Gold Standard Whey, Protein Energy, and Performance Whey supplements.

In fact, out of the 100+ protein powders we compared for our review, only the big mass gainers give you more protein per serving (Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass Gainer, and Optimum Nutrition Pro Gainer).

By using hydrolyzed whey protein isolate, O.N. have been able to keep the fat and carb levels low, with just 140 calories per serving.

Advanced hydrolyzed whey protein

Hydrolyzing whey protein isolate means the amino bonds between larger proteins are broken apart, enabling faster digestion. This makes it an excellent choice for a post-workout protein shake, when you’re looking to replenish amino stores and fuel muscle protein synthesis (MPS).

Cholesterol level has also been kept low, at 10 mg (3% DV) per serving, together with 180 mg of sodium (8% DV), 1 g of sugar, and 130 mg of calcium (10% DV). Sodium and potassium levels can vary slightly depending on the flavor, but most of the micronutrient profile (vitamins and minerals) remains the same.

Each serving contains 15.5 g of Essential Amino Acids (EAAs and BCAAs), 9.8 g of Conditionally Essential Amino Acids (CAAs), and 5.5 g of Nonessential Amino Acids (NAAs). That’s around 6 g more EAAs per serving compared to Optimum Nutrition Casein protein.

Other ingredients include cocoa, natural and artificial flavors, sucralose and acesulfame potassium as sweeteners, and soy lecithin to improve mixability in water or milk.

Protein Powder Buying Guide

Review Overview

Overall Review Rating

4.5 / 5

At the time of writing this review, each 39 gram serving of Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydrowhey was priced at $1.31, based on buying the 3.5 pound tub. This was cheaper than the 1.75 lb tub, which worked out at $1.53 per serving.

Because of the additional processing involved, hydrolyzed whey protein powders will almost always cost more than whey concentrate.

For comparison, Dymatize ISO 100 Whey also uses hydrolyzed whey protein isolate, but mixed with whey protein isolate. In this case you’re looking at around $1.11 per serving, based on the 3 pound tub. The lower price is because you get 5 grams less protein per serving.

Overall, we’re very impressed with Platinum Hydrowhey. You get more protein than almost any other protein powder, and it’s one of the only supplements to use pure hydrolyzed whey protein isolate.

You also have a range of great tasting flavors to choose from, and the powder mixes well in water and milk.

It’s also backed by hundreds of highly rated reviews on Amazon, praising the quick absorption, high protein content, amazing taste, and affordable price. Quite possibly the best hydrolyzed whey protein powder on the market.
