Six Star Whey provides you with 30g of protein, 9g of carbohydrates, and just 2 g of fat per serving. This is in addition to the 6.8g of BCAAs (L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, and L-Valine), 5.4g of Glutamine, and 2.5g of creatine monohydrate, which combine to form their Advanced Recovery and Performance Blend.

It’s already proven incredibly popular, with over 1200 highly rated reviews on Amazon, praising its affordability, high-protein content, and combination of proven, effective ingredients.

So how does this compare to some of MuscleTech’s own protein powders (Six Star brand is from the makers of MuscleTech), and does the protein/BCAA/Creatine/Glutamine combination represent good value for money?

In this review we’ll compare Six Star Whey to two other top rated whey protein powders; Whey Protein Powder Isolate from Bulk Supplements, and MuscleTech Nitro Tech. This includes the ingredients, price, dosage, and customer feedback, to help you find the best whey protein for your fitness goals and budget.

Six Star Whey Protein Ingredients

Six Star Whey Protein Ingredients

Six Star Whey Protein features a similar macronutrient profile to Body Fortress Advanced Whey, with the same 30 g of protein and 8 g of carbs per scoop. But because Six Star use a different protein blend, they’ve dropped the fat content from 5 g down to just 1 g, which also reduces the calories from 200 to 160 per serving.

The Whey Protein Plus Blend contains whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, hydrolyzed whey protein, and whey protein isolate. It’s a unique combination that aims to speed up the digestion time (hydrolyzed), while reducing the amount of carbs and fat (isolate), and keeping the price affordable (whey concentrate).

In addition to the high protein content, you’re also getting 2.5 g of creatine per scoop. In most cases, you’ll consume 2 servings per day; in the morning or pre-workout, and during the day or post-workout. This brings the creatine intake up to 5 g per day, which is the maximum recommended level for a ‘maintenance phase’ after ‘loading’.

Vitamins, minerals, and other ingredients

In terms of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), the level of calcium is incredibly high for a protein powder. With 230 mg per scoop (23% Daily Value), Six Star Whey delivers more calcium than BSN Syntha-6, Dymatize ISO 100, and nearly twice as much as MusclePharm Combat.

Sodium content is relatively high (190 mg, 8% DV), as is the amount of cholesterol (75 mg, 25% DV, or 80 mg if you choose Cookies and Cream flavor). To put this in perspective, MuscleTech NitroTech has just 25mg of cholesterol, while Six Star Whey Isolate has 0 mg of cholesterol.

Other ingredients listed on the label include cocoa powder, natural and artificial flavors, sucralose, and acesulfame-potassium. There’s also a note to say this formula contains milk and soy lecithins, which could be worth remembering if you’re lactose intolerant.

Backed by science?

A six-week study compared the effects of regular whey protein against the core ingredients in Six Star 100% Whey Protein. The results found that those taking the Six Star ingredients gained more muscle (8.8 vs. 5.1 lbs) and more than twice the strength on the bench press (34 vs. 14 lbs) compared to the regular whey protein group.

Protein Powder Buying Guide

Review Overview

Overall Review Rating

4 / 5

At the time of writing this review, each 51 gram serving of Six Star Whey Protein was priced at $0.91, based on buying a 5 pound tub of the Triple Chocolate flavor from Amazon. That’s compared to $0.78 for Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey.

The big difference here is that Six Star Whey has 25% more protein than Gold Standard Whey (30 g vs. 24 g). You’re also getting 2.5 g of creatine, which typically retails for around $0.04 per gram, so the added creatine alone nearly makes up the difference in price.

Protein blends are similar, except Gold Standard Whey uses whey peptides, whereas Six Star Whey uses hydrolyzed whey isolate, which digests faster than standard whey concentrate.

Overall, we were very impressed by Six Star Whey. The cholesterol level is a bit high for our liking, but the range of flavors, added creatine, high level of protein, and competitive price are all great reasons to buy a tub.

With over 1,000 highly rated reviews on Amazon, it’s already a popular choice. Customers praise how well the powder mixes in a shaker bottle, the great value for money, high protein content, and delicious flavors.

Most of the 3 star reviews downgraded their rating because they disliked one flavor, but liked another. This really comes down to personal preference, and why we recommend buying a 2 pound tub first, to make sure you like the flavor.
