The Ironman ATIS 4000 Inversion Table is the top-of-the-line model in a collection that also includes the ATIS 3500 and ATIS 1000.

But weighing over 100 lbs, how does it compare to some of the lighter models in their Gravity series, and the similarly priced tables from Teeter?

In our review we’ll take a look at its unique combination of safety features, together with the ankle holders, health benefits, and inversion control system. This should help you decide if the ATIS 4000 is the best inversion table for your own home gym.

Design and safety features

Ironman ATIS 4000 Inversion Table

One of the key benefits of the Ironman ATIS 4000 is the way it combines inversion therapy with ab training for full core conditioning.

The ATIS 4000 achieves this using a 10-position locking pin system, rather than a safety tether cord to control the maximum angle of inversion (Smart Gear).

This allows complete control over the maximum inversion angle, even when you’re on the table. Not only will this save you time, but with a weight capacity of 300 lbs it also ensures against the potential for slippage beyond your limit, which can be an issue with some tether straps.

To create such a high weight capacity Ironman have used extra-wide oval steel tubing in the construction of the frame, which has been covered with a scratch-resistant powder-coated finish for improved durability.

The only downside is that you can’t fold the ATIS 4000 like you can with most other inversion tables. But if you can sacrifice some space for improved strength and stability, this is certainly an excellent choice.

Once you’ve built up to the full inversion, built-in hand grips in the corners of the base frame allow for deeper stretching of your back muscles and provide assistance when you need to return to an upright position.

This is made even easier thanks to the wide range of height settings for the back support and boom section, helping anyone up to 6ft 6ins tall to find that perfect tipping point and maintain a safe, controlled inversion.

To help prevent against any discomfort, Ironman have used a quick-release ratchet gear system for the ankle comforters. Not only is this quick to lock and release, but it’s also been designed with an extended handle, reducing the distance you need to stretch to make adjustments.

Coupled with the removable lumbar pillow this takes much more of the strain off your lower back compared to many of the lower priced designs.

Two other design features worth mentioning are the oversized foot platform, and the easily accessible storage section attached to one side.

The foot platform does an excellent job of keeping you supported as you prepare for your inversion session, while the storage section is ideal for storing small items, such as an MP3 player, glasses, or phone.

Safety features
Inversion tables traditionally have two main safety features – the side handles and the tether strap to limit the angle.

As we already mentioned, the Ironman ATIS 4000 has replaced the safety strap with a secure locking system in the form of Smart Gear. But they’ve also included full-length safety handles, which have been covered with a durable non-slip coating to assist you with returning to an upright position.

To prevent any movement on hard floors, Ironman have added rubber feet to prevent any unwanted movement.

One final safety feature we that’s included is one we don’t see too often. This is a locking system for the boom.

Although this comes in the form of a bolt and washer – both of which could be easily misplaced – it’s still a useful feature to have if you want to prevent unauthorised usage by young children. We’ve also seen a similar feature on the entry level Body Max IT6000 and Body Champ IT8070.

Ease of assembly and storage options

Assembly instructions for the ATIS 4000 are concise and easy to follow

As a Paradigm Health and Wellness company, Ironman inversion tables tend to be supplied with user manuals that are clear and easy to follow.

Unfortunately the information about how to actually use the table once it’s assembled is quite limited. Inversion therapy itself is a fairly straightforward process, and Ironman do a good job of explaining this in the manual. However, it would have been nice to find an instructional DVD or full colour guide to the various ab exercises and how to progress to full inversion if you’re a beginner.

Also, while there is a full parts list with reference numbers as part of an exploded diagram, you only have clear pictures of the bolts and washers, and not the larger pieces of the frame and back support.

The assembly steps themselves though are actually very clear, and the limited number of parts certainly makes things simpler. All the tools you need are also included.

Folding and storage
This is something you probably already noticed from the pictures, but the Ironman ATIS 4000 cannot be folded like most inversion tables.

It also weighs in at an impressive 111 lbs, which means you’ll need to allocate some permanent space to this piece of equipment if you want to use it on a regular basis.

The weight comes as a result of using the extra-wide oval tubing for the steel frame, and is part of the reason the ATIS 4000 is one of the strongest inversion therapy tables in the industry (320 lb capacity).

Customer Reviews

Despite being priced towards the top end of Ironman’s inversion table collection, it’s still only considered mid-range when compared with the Teeter Hang Ups designs.

This can make for a difficult decision when deciding whether to choose the ATIS 4000 or one of the Teeter tables, such as the EP-560 Ltd with its various accessory options.

Fortunately there’s hundreds if not thousands of people who have been in your position before, resulting in over 100 reviews being left on Amazon alone documenting why they chose the ATIS over similar models.

Hopefully we’ve been able to provide you with in-depth comparisons and feature analysis in our own review, but it’s always a good idea to take Amazon customer review feedback into account.

To save time, we read through the vast majority of these reviews ourselves, and put together the following lists of pros and cons based on what we found.

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Sturdy frame design
  • Wide base to improve stability
  • Lever release ratchet ankle system prevents too much crouching down when locking or releasing the ankle holders, which is beneficial for anyone with a bad back
  • Removable lumbar pillow
  • Easily adjustable for different user heights
  • Variety of inversion angle settings caters for a wide range of experience and mobility levels
  • Front and rear ankle clamps are almost opposite each other when locked, which is an improvement over models like the Ironman LX300, and makes for a more comfortable experience
  • Handles built into the base work great for helping to stretch your back and strengthen your abs

Cons:

  • Much heavier than most inversion tables, which can make it difficult to move around (111 lbs)
  • Warranty coverage is shorter than the coverage offered by Teeter (usually offer 5 years full coverage)
  • Does not fold up for storage
  • Ratchet lock is difficult to adjust at times
  • As with most other inversion tables, we were able to find a few people who experienced discomfort with the ankle holders. In most situations a thicker pair of socks or wrapping a towel around the ankles solves the issue, but if you’re still concerned or have had bad experiences in the past, perhaps an inversion chair would be a better option

What’s covered by the warranty?

  • Frame: 1 year
  • Parts: 90 days

Review Overview

Overall Review Rating

4 / 5

So should you buy the Ironman ATIS 4000? It certainly stacks up well against the earlier ATIS models, but is it ahead of the Teeter EP-560 Ltd, which is one of their most popular designs and in the same price range?

The Teeter has the longer warranty coverage (5 years) and the same ability to lock at full inversion, but you're relying on a safety tether strap to control the range of motion. Our personal preference is for the 10-position Smart Lock system, as it allows you to make adjustments once you're on the table. This means less trial and error finding the best safety strap length, which becomes more of an issue when one person will be using the table.

The Teeter does have a wider range of accessory options, but this will of course come with an extra cost. Weight capacity is the same at 300 lbs, but the ATIS 4000 has the extended handle for the ankle holder adjustment, as well as full length handles. These are both features the EP-560 is missing.

Overall, our personal preference is with the ATIS 4000. If space is an issue then the Teeter EP-560 Ltd would probably be a better option due to its compact folded footprint, but apart from that the ATIS certainly feels like the best value for money.
