The NordicTrack 2450 Commercial Treadmill is an upgrade over the earlier 1750 model, and the first in NordicTrack’s Commercial series to offer a 15″ HDTV viewing screen.

So what else can you expect from the 2450, and is it the best home treadmill in the collection, in terms of value for money?

This is one of the questions we’ll answer in this review, by taking a look at the design and safety features, console functions, entertainment options, and workout programs.

We’ll also be making some important comparisons between the NordicTrack 2450 and the top-of-the-line 2950 model, to help you find the best machine for indoor running and walking workouts.

Design and safety features

NordicTrack 2450 Commercial Treadmill

Although the NordicTrack 2450 is the next model up from the 1750 in their Commercial series, this doesn’t mean that everything is upgraded.

However, the motor does get more powerful, with a 4.0 CHP DurX system now powering the speed and incline of the treadbelt. This has also been placed inside a bigger motor case to reduce vibration, with dual cooling fans to keep the temperature down and reduce wear on internal components.

This is a sign NordicTrack pride themselves on the quality of their treadmill motors, as it joins the frame in being covered by a lifetime warranty.

Despite the increase in motor power (3.8 CHP on the 1750 model), the maximum belt speed remains the same at 12 mph. There’s also no change in the incline settings, ranging from a 3% decline through to a 15% incline.

So why should you care about a more powerful motor?

An increase in power equates to faster transitions between the various treadbelt speeds, which can be useful for a variety of workout programs, including high intensity interval training (HIIT).

It’s only a short way off being the most powerful motor NordicTrack use in their in-home treadmills (4.25 CHP, found on the 2950 and Elite 9700 Pro models), and it’s probably not the only upgrade that would attract you to this machine.

So apart from the motor there really aren’t too many differences from a running deck perspective, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Advanced Runner’s Flex deck cushioning
The 22″ x 60″ running surface is amongst the largest in the industry, and provides enough space for taller users (6ft+) to build up to their full natural running stride.

Underneath the 2-ply belt you also have 2.5″ dynamically balanced rollers, which are designed to reduce wear on the belt and improve durability.

One final feature we wanted to mention was the running deck. Being part of their Commercial series means that it’s fitted with adjustable Runner’s Flex cushioning, which reduces the impact of your stride by around 30% when activated.

This provides a level of impact absorption that protects your knee and ankle joints, but can be deactivated if you want a running experience that closely resembles the firmness of running on the road.

Safety features
In terms of safety features, the NordicTrack 2450 is fitted with a safety key that connects your clothing to the console via two clips and a lanyard.

If you were to fall out of reach of the emergency stop button, the clip will detach from the console and the belt will quickly come to a stop.

If you’re looking for a treadmill that’s safe for family environments, the NordicTrack 2450 is the first in their Commercial series to include a child-safety passcode on the console.

This is a feature we’ve seen before on some of the treadmills in Precor’s Energy and Precision series’, and allows you to enter a 4-digit passcode to lock the functionality of the console. The lock prevents the running deck and belt from moving until the correct code is entered.

Don’t worry if you forget your code, there’s a master password stored in the user manual.

Console features

NordicTrack 2450 Commercial Treadmill

The NordicTrack 2450 is the first model in their Commercial series to include an integrated 15″ HDTV in place of the tablet holder that was fitted to the earlier 1750 model.

Being a TV this does mean that you need to connect it up the same way you would any other TV, such as via an HDMI cable. There’s even a series of sockets for connecting an AV cable if you wanted to watch DVDs via the screen instead of standard television channels.

The screen size is an abvious attraction and it means you don’t have to worry about battery power the same way you might with a tablet. But it really comes down to personal preference over which is the best option for you.

If you’re connecting to iFit via a wireless network anyway and have a tablet device, then you can easily watch films and TV shows on services like Netflix. If you don’t have a tablet and would prefer the wider viewing angle and access to the same channels you get on a regular TV, then the NordicTrack 2450 would be the better option.

Another entertainment feature to be built into the console is an iPod docking station. This lets you listen to your favourite workout music through the speakers, and even change the volume using buttons on the console.

When you’re not watching the HDTV screen, the 7″ full colour touchscreen provides clear feedback of your workout results, and an intuitive interface for setting up and completing an iFit workout.

Some of the feedback shown on the screen includes:

  • Incline level
  • Workout duration
  • Time remaining
  • Number of calories burned
  • Distance walked / jogged / run

  • Number of vertical feet climbed
  • Speed of the treadmill belt
  • Pace
  • Heart rate
  • Laps completed (of a quarter mile track)

Being web-enabled also means that you can read your emails, browse the internet, and check social media profiles while you walk, jog, or run.

Similar to the 1750 model, the NordicTrack 2450 offers you two forms of heart rate monitoring. One option is to hold the CardioGrip touch sensors built into the handles, and the other is to wear a telemetry chest strap.

The chest strap is going to be the more reliable option if you choose one of the onboard ‘pulse’ workouts, as the console will need continuous feedback to keep you within your target heart rate zone.

If you’re looking to adjust the incline or belt speed manually, OneTouch buttons have been added to each side of the console. The result is less time spent pushing buttons and more time focussing on your workout.

You also have a set of workout fans for keeping you cool, and an integrated accessory tray for storing the TV remote, smartphone, water bottle, and any other small items you might need.

Workout program selection

NordicTrack 2450 Commercial Treadmill

In addition to having some of the most powerful motors and widest incline ranges, NordicTrack treadmills are renowned for the quality and variety of their workout programs.

The NordicTrack 2450 is no exception, where you can choose from a selection of onboard, iFit, ‘Set-A-Goal’, and pulse workouts to help you reach your fitness goals.

  • Onboard workoutsThis type of workout follows a set profile of speed and incline settings, which varies between programs to suit different fitness levels and goals. Each program is split into a series of segments, and you can override the belt speed or incline as you reach each segment. However, once you move onto the next stage in the program, the treadmill reverts to the default settings.
  • iFit workoutsHaving the 7″ full colour touchscreen creates a much more immersive running experience than the backlit screen provided on NordicTrack’s C series treadmills, making it a much more attractive option for workouts.Providing you have a subscription, you can download personalized workouts and routes to the console, then view your progress through a combination of Google Maps and Street View.
  • ‘Set-A-Goal’ workoutsAlthough this workout category is nothing new for NordicTrack (something we’ve seen on their entry level C 630 treadmill), this is the first time we’re seeing ‘pace’ feature as one of the options. You can now set a calorie, distance, time, or pace goal, after which the console will display your target. For calories, distance, and time, this will be a number that counts down to zero, but for pace you’ll see a target on the screen for as long as you stay on the belt.
  • Pulse workoutsThis is a type of program that was missing from the earlier 1750 model, and requires you to wear a telemtry chest strap for transmitting your heart rate to the receiver in the console.Pulse workouts can be targetted towards either Performance or Endurance, which will influence the percentage of your maximum heart rate that gets set as your target.

After starting the belt in motion, the speed and incline will then automatically adjust to keep you at that target heart rate level.

There’s also a manual mode if you want complete control over the incline and speed settings without relying on any preset profiles.

Ease of assembly / maintenance required

NordicTrack 2450 Commercial Treadmill

In our review of the NordicTrack 1750 we mentioned how much quicker the assembly was compared to the C Series treadmills, due to how the console was attached.

However, for this treadmill the assembly steps get a little more complicated with the addition of the HDTV screen and storage tray.

Attaching the console is still a simple process, and there’s nothing particularly complicated about the extra steps, but you’ll definitely need to allow more time to get setup.

Most of the treadmill arrives pre=assembled, including the running deck and console, but fitting the two together via the uprights and upright wires can be time consuming.

You might also need to add on time for console or incline calibration, connecting up the TV, joining a wireless network for access to iFit, and setting a passcode on the console.

Taking all of this into account, even with some assistance it’s still best to set aside at least 90 minutes from getting all the parts unpacked to enjoying your first workout.

Maintenance required
As with the 1750 model, the belt for the NordicTrack 2450 has already been coated with a high-performance lubricant. This helps reduce the level of ongoing maintenance.

Other than wiping the equipment down with a damp cloth and mild soap solution, there’s not much else required. The only other issue you might need to check for is belt slip.

If the belt does move off-center then you can set it back on track using the hex key (supplied) and idle roller screws at the back of the running deck.

Folding and transport
Despite the addition of the 15″ HDTV screen, it’s still possible to fold the deck and roll the treadmill using transport wheels attached to the base.

NordicTrack’s EasyLift Assist technology reduces the amount of heavy lifting needed to raise and lower the running deck, with a storage latch used for secure storage in the upright position.

When it comes to starting your next workout, you can then just press against the storage latch and let the deck lower slowly to the ground.

What’s covered by the warranty?

  • Frame and motor: Lifetime
  • Parts and electronics: 5 years
  • Labor: 2 years

Review Overview

Overall Review Rating

5 / 5

Despite having a slightly higher price tag than their 'C' series treadmills, the NordicTrack 2450 is in a range that also includes some bestselling designs from other household names, such as Sole Fitness (F85 and F77) and ProForm (Pro 7000 and Pro 9000).

What really sets the NordicTrack model ahead of its competitors is the entertainment features, combined with an immersive workout experience and the full nutrition and workout tracking benefits of iFit.

Although Precor have their Personal Viewing Screen (PVS), this only attaches to their high-end commercial models, like the TRM 835, which can cost in excess of $8500.

With the NordicTrack 2450 you're also seeing some serious upgrades over the earlier 1750 model, although the price difference will really determine which is best for your own home workouts.

The 1750 model usually costs 20% less than the 2450, but you have to be willing to give up the DVD and Blu-Ray capabilities of the 15" HDTV screen, 10 of the onboard workout apps, the cooling fan in the accessory tray, and settle for a motor with slightly less power.

Incline range, belt speed, running area, deck cushioning system, and the touch screen remain the same across both machines. Also, if you're signing up for an iFit subscription then perhaps having 30 onboard workouts instead of 40 isn't such a bad thing.

If you love the thought of watching sports, movies, and TV shows while still being able to monitor important workout feedback and choose from a wider selection of workouts, then the NordicTrack 2450 is your best option. Alternatively, if you don't mind losing the HDTV and are simply looking for a treadmill with a colour touch screen, the entry level 1750 could be more cost effective.
