What are the Benefits Of Battle Ropes?

A battle rope is a rope you anchor around a stationary point and use in different ways to exercise targeted muscle groups and your whole body. You’ve probably seen someone at your local gym standing in place and smacking these ropes against the floor in wave patterns before.

They come in several materials, the strongest being poly dacron, which is a blend of dacron plastic fibers and polypropylene. It doesn’t fray or shed fibers like other materials, such as nylon and polyester.

Poly dacron tends to be a little more expensive, though, so the lower-end battle ropes are typically made using the other materials mentioned.

Battle ropes can be bought in different lengths and sizes. Typically the thicker and longer the rope, the more of a workout you’ll get. They’re generally available in 1.5-inch and 2-inch thickness.

The heavier 2-inch rope is directed at strength training, while the 1.5-inch is great for cardio fitness and lean muscle building.

Although there are a variety of lengths available, the usual ones are 30 ft, 40 ft, and 50 ft. Longer lengths require more strength and overall effort to keep your rhythm going, while shorter lengths will be less taxing on you.

Don’t forget: the distance from your anchor point is half the length of the rope, meaning a 30 ft battle rope will give you a 15 ft length to wield with each arm. Keep this in mind for your home gym size.

With that said, let’s dive into our selection of the greatest battle ropes for your workout routine.

Top 6 Best Battle Ropes for Home Gyms

If you’re a novice when it comes to the best ropes for working out, there are a few things you need to take into consideration before ordering your first set.

Different brands offer different quality and suit varying budgets. You’d also need to consider factors such as the available space in your home and even your preferred grip.

We’ve done research across the board on battle ropes, so you don’t need to. Factors such as strength levels, space, durability, and budget have all been taken into account and helped us narrow down a list of 6 battle ropes for you to consider.

From brands such as Perantlb, Yes4All, Nordic Lifting, Rogue Fitness, and even Amazon Basics, we’ve tested all the parameters and compared them to come up with this list. Take a look and see which battle rope is the best for you.

Rogue 45” Sheathed Conditioning Rope

Rogue Sheathed Conditioning ropes
  • Length: 45 ft
  • Rope Material: Polypropylene
  • Weight: 26 lbs
  • Price: $$$

These workout ropes feature unique looped handles for a friendlier grip while exercising. We recommend you only use them with a secure anchor to ensure durability.

The Rogue ropes come with a protective sheath that is suitable for the outdoors. With an elegant black color, these will look classy in any homegym.

These ropes were made to work. At only one length, they’re more suited to a harder intensity workout. We found the lack of length options restricting compared to competitors. The tight weave of the polypropylene resists fraying and shedding, so your ropes last longer.

Length of Rope

The looped handles are a little disconcerting if you’re used to gripping the ropes themselves, but we managed to adjust to them quickly. They also offer a slightly different tug on your muscles depending on the position of your hands.

The weight is a little low for the length of rope, so it’s more suitable if you plan on doing higher reps.

Perantlb 100% Poly Dacron Heavy Battle Rope
  • Length: 30 ft / 40 ft / 50 ft
  • Rope Material: 100% poly dacron
  • Weight: from 35-40 lbs (30 ft)
  • Price: $$

This battle rope from Perantlb is made from poly dacron, and, as such, it’s of high quality and doesn’t shed like traditional ropes tend to. We loved that it comes with a nylon sleeve to increase the longevity of the product, so it lasts for years.

The colors are predominantly black with the bright blue of the brand name standing out, and the handles are of decent thickness and quality. Overall, we considered it a great-looking product.

Set of Ropes

The first thing we noticed besides the sleek style is that this is one heavy set of ropes. If you’re a newcomer, bear in mind that this is a pretty heavy rope for a 1.5”. These come with a carrying bag as well, which you’ll find superbly convenient.

When we used them outdoors on rough terrain, we noticed the protective sleeve began to fray, so we recommend flat surfaces indoors. It comes in three sizes, compared to some other brands that come in six.

If space is an issue for you, you might need to stick to the shorter 30 ft option.

Nordic Lifting Battle Rope
  • Length: 40 ft / 50 ft
  • Rope Material: Industrial quality polyester
  • Weight: 23 lbs - 40 lbs
  • Price: $$$

The design on the sleeve is a chic-looking geometric black and gray pattern, ideal for bringing a little personality into your home gym. We found the handles to be padded and slightly thicker than the rope by about 0.2”. The anchor kit is pretty versatile as we saw that it can be installed on the wall or ground.

We also loved that it came with both wood and concrete screw options to suit whichever area we planned to use. The convenience was above and beyond expectation.

It has an attractive design which we enjoyed as a pleasant option apart from most conditioning ropes that are simply black. It might not be made of poly dacron, but it’s still a high-quality polyester. So, no fraying occurred — even with hard use.

Permanent Setup At your Home Gym

The sleeve is slightly thicker as well, though it lacks an extra protective thickness in the center of the rope to prevent wear and tear at the anchor.

Unlike the Perantlb, it doesn’t come with a carabiner, even with its higher price tag. Instead, it has a top-class anchor kit. This is perfect for a permanent setup at your home gym, but not so perfect if you want more mobility.

It has a 1-year warranty. This gave us confidence that the company puts a lot of faith in their own product. It gave us peace of mind in case anything did happen.

We loved the extra padding on the handles, giving our hands a break during those longer workouts. Plus, lowers the chances of callouses.

YUELIVES Battle Rope
  • Length: 30 ft
  • Rope Material: 100% poly dacron
  • Weight: 15 lbs
  • Price: $

To Buy Screws Specifically For Concrete

Another of the top budget ropes is the YUELIVES. These ropes have an efficient design and a subtle yellow thread weaving throughout the slick black. Even though it’s more affordable, it still boasts a poly dacron rope.

It also comes with an anchor, although we missed having the anchor strap which wasn’t included.

Another downside is that there aren’t instructions. And, you may need to buy screws specifically for concrete as these specific ones don’t come supplied.

Despite this, we found plenty to love about these ropes. For the price, this set of battle ropes is fantastically sturdy. It’s worth the purchase if your budget is a little lower.

It’s decently thick and the weight is perfect for its size. These ropes provide a decent workout and a good degree of durability thanks to the poly dacron.

Though this one doesn’t come with a sleeve, unlike some of its competitors, brightly colored sleeves are available separately. One may be a worthy investment to help elongate the lifespan of your conditioning ropes.

Yes4All Battle Exercise Training Rope with Protective Cover
  • Length: 30 ft / 40 ft / 50 ft
  • Rope Material: 100% poly dacron
  • Weight: 16 lbs - 44 lbs
  • Price: $$$

Best Battle Rope Material

Simple and elegant, this plain black poly dacron battle rope is made of one of the best materials you can find. The nylon sleeve protects the rope from dirt, friction damage, and fraying; increasing its durability.

It suits an on-the-go lifestyle as it’s easy to set up wherever you want. Or you can venture outdoors and use a tree as an anchor point. The extra-long handles were great for those of us with larger hands, so you’ll love this set if you feel you need more room for a comfortable grip.

The Yes4All ropes don’t come with an anchor strap, but this isn’t a dealbreaker. The rope itself is made of the best battle rope material, so there’s no complaint there.

The nylon sleeve is satisfactory and, like Nordic Lifting, this brand offers a 1-year warranty. We found the weight to be excellently gauged, being neither too heavy nor too light for the size you choose.

The biggest issue with this rope is that there are no installation guides. This left us with a bit of guesswork while setting up the anchor.

The handles were one of the biggest letdowns, as they didn’t seem to us to be the greatest quality and they felt as though they may separate from the rope. Overall, it’s still a good product with a durable rope and is a worthy addition to your home gym.

Amazon Basics 1.5 Inch Heavy Exercise Training Workout Battle Rope
  • Length: 30 ft / 40 ft / 50 ft
  • Rope Material: Polyester blend
  • Weight: 15 lbs +
  • Price: $

Durable Battle Rope

If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, this is one of the most popular. With a three-strand polyester blend rope, it features high tensile strength, preventing damage or fraying. It may not be made of poly dacron, like the higher-end conditioning ropes, but affordability has its downsides and the polyester blend is surprisingly good.

It doesn’t come with an anchor, so we needed to improvise and find a tree or pole to use. If you choose a tree though, we recommend wrapping a chain around the tree and then using the chain as your anchor to prevent chafing the rope against the tough bark.

The handles feel cheap and plastic as well—not great for a sweaty workout where a non-slip grip is useful. However, we liked that even the smallest rope felt thick and heavy, so you won’t be disappointed when it comes to weight.

And while we found this durable battle rope to be a little stiff straight out of the box, after a couple of sessions it began to loosen up nicely.

Unlike the other brands mentioned so far, the Amazon Basics rope doesn’t come with a protective sleeve, meaning it’s likely to start showing signs of wear and tear sooner.

Benefits Of Battle Ropes: What Do Ropes Work Out?

People training functional fitness in gym

If you’re unfamiliar with a battle rope workout, you might think of them as ‘exercise ropes for arms.’ But battle ropes offer an intense calorie-killing workout that’ll set your core ablaze.

Not only are your abdominals and core activated, but the shoulders and general upper and lower body too. Your lower back, upper back, biceps, triceps, and neck muscles will all feel the burn as you pump those gym ropes.

Full-body workout

Instead of targeting specific muscles and getting limited (and possibly lopsided) results, a full-body workout is the best way to gain muscle and burn fat efficiently.

You’ll also build strength more equally across your body, improving overall movement and even alleviating some aches and pains from common ailments caused by not moving enough. It’s also a great time saver.

You can achieve more in terms of strengthening all muscle groups in the same amount of time you’d dedicate to single area exercises. This is where battle rope exercise shines.

Low-impact cardio workout

Another muscle that battle ropes work out is the heart. Yes, that’s right; swinging these exercise ropes around is a fantastic low-impact cardiorespiratory workout. It gets the heart going and the lungs pumping, improving overall health and fitness.

Many people prefer not to run or jog, so using battle ropes offers a low-impact way of getting a similar result. Of course, some of the exercises aren’t so low-impact. You’d have to pick and choose which exercises would suit you the best.

But, if impact isn’t something that bothers you, you have the full range of exercises to explore. It’s no secret that cardio fitness is a good indicator of a longer lifespan. So, if running isn’t your jam then battle ropes are a great compromise.

Suitable for everyone

One of the greatest features of battle ropes is that they can be used sitting down, making them accessible to disabled or elderly persons. Because they strengthen core, your balance and coordination will also see an improvement.

Easy storage

Although they can be quite long, they’re generally very easy to roll up and store away, so they don’t take up too much room. Even the anchor point can be very space efficient and out-of-the-way, meaning this is one of the best no-fuss pieces of equipment you can get.

Benefits Of Battle Ropes Exercise: How to Use Battle Ropes

Whether you have your own battle ropes or are wondering how to use ropes at the gym, you’ll find the answer here. As with most pieces of exercise equipment, the way you use it affects which muscle groups are worked.

Performing bilateral waves targets the erector spinae muscles more efficiently. On the other hand, unilateral waves target the external obliques to a greater degree.

Alternating wide circles will work your rotator cuff and shoulders differently compared to unilateral waves, giving you a more rounded workout for those muscle groups.

As mentioned before, you can even use these ropes sitting and still see benefits. Most of the same muscles are activated, so it functions as a low-impact passive activity that won’t overly tax your body.

For those who require the assistance of a seat, it’s the perfect cardio and strength-training workout.

Here’s a list of popular battle rope workouts, including a few that haven’t been mentioned yet.

  • Unilateral waves
  • Bilateral waves
  • Rope slams
  • Alternating wide circles
  • Jumping slams
  • Figure 8’s
  • Jumping jacks

Best Battle Ropes Buying Guide

Before you commit to a particular set of ropes, consider these factors before making your purchase.

Intense workout in gym

These ropes take a beating, so it’s no surprise that one of the most common problems is the fraying of the rope. Certain materials such as the poly dacron are designed to better withstand friction, so it’s an important thing to consider.

Fitness level

Don’t buy a 2-inch 50 ft set of ropes if you’re new to working out and kill yourself trying to lift them. Rather start small with a 1.5-inch 30 ft rope and work your way up. Leave those long 50 ft 2-inch ropes to the heavy lifters with enough muscle and endurance to take them on.

Due to the friction between your hands and the handles, the thickness and quality of the handle itself are also important if you want to avoid calluses and accidental slips. The other alternative is to invest in a great pair of gym gloves to maximize your grip.

Best Battle Ropes Summary

A set of battle ropes is a fantastic addition to your home gym. Their portability, affordability, and delivery of a complete and satisfactory workout make them indispensable.

Quality is always worth the investment, but everyone’s budget is different, so ultimately the choice lies with you. Either way, whether it’s the top of the line or your budget’s best option, we highly recommend purchasing one of these game-changing battle ropes to help you reach your fitness goals.
