With 23 grams per serving, Natural Oats and Whey has more carbs than most whey protein powders, but is still a long way off the 85 grams found in Optimum Nutrition Pro Gainer.

Most of these carbs come from whole oat flour, which is a slow-burning form of complex carbohydrate that helps provide a sustained energy boost.

But it’s the level of dietary fiber that really sets this protein powder apart, with 5 grams per serving (20% DV). Dietary fiber has a range of health benefits, such as lowering cholesterol levels, controlling blood sugar levels, and helping achieve a healthy body weight.

Natural Oats and Whey uses a protein blend of whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate. The whey isolate is a form of whey concentrate that’s been further processed to remove the fat, cholesterol, and lactose. Whey concentrate has been added to keep the price down and provide high quality protein with low levels of carbs and fat.

Vitamins and minerals

Unfortunately, as with most whey protein powders, the micronutrient profile is pretty much non-existent. Pro Gainer, Serious Mass, and EAS AdvantEDGE are examples of protein powders with high quality vitamins, mineral, and antioxidants blends, but the most you get here is 15% of your daily value for calcium.

Cholesterol is kept low (40 mg, 13%), but with a high level of sodium (250 mg, 10% DV). This is based on the Milk Chocolate flavor. If you chose Vanilla Bean, cholesterol is slightly lower (35 mg, 12% DV), but sodium level is even higher (320 mg, 13% DV).

Another benefit of Natural Oats and Whey is that it contains no artificial sweeteners. Typically we’ll see either sucralose, acesulfame potassium, or a combination of the two used in whey protein powders, but neither of these are listed on the ingredient label.

However, you do still have a small amount of soy, in the form of soy lecithins. This is used to improve the mixability of the powder after you mix it with water or milk.

Each serving also contains around 10.8 g of Essential Amino Acids (EAAs), 7.8 g of Conditionally Essential Amino Acids (CAAs), and 5.4 g of Nonessential Amino Acids (NAAs).

When is the best time to take it?

At the time of writing this review, each 54 g serving of Optimum Nutrition Natural Oats and Whey was priced at $1.15, based on buying the 3-pound tub.

The protein blend is nothing out of the ordinary for a whey protein powder. Whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate is the most popular combination out there.

So why such a high price tag? After all, Gold Standard 100% Whey was priced at $0.78 per scoop for the same amount of protein.

The fact is that no other supplement company combines such a high amount of protein (24 g) with a large amount of slow-release carbs (23 g), all while keeping the fat down to just 2 grams per serving.

Muscle Feast have a supplement called Whole Oat Powder, but this delivers 26 g of carbs and just 7 g of protein per scoop, with 3 g of fat. Not ideal if your main goal is to boost protein intake.

You could always try mixing half a cup of Quaker oats with a whey protein isolate powder, but this would work out even more expensive, with far less control over the serving size. In addition, Natural Oats and Whey delivers more dietary fiber per serving than any protein powder we know.
