Now Foods Ultra Omega 3 provides you with 1,000 mg of Natural Fish Oil Concentrate, and 700 mg of long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids per softgel. This includes 500 mg of EPA and 250 mg of DHA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid and Docosahexaenoic Acid).
The fat level is lower than supplements like Nature Made Fish Oil, so you’re also getting fewer calories, with 10 per serving and 1 g of fat.
But how do you know if this is enough EPA and DHA to experience the desired health benefits?
In this review we’ll compare Ultra Omega 3 to two other top-rated fish oil supplements; Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, and Viva Naturals Omega-3 Fish Oil, which has one of the highest levels of EPA on the market (1400 mg per serving).
Comparisons include price, customer feedback, cost per serving, ingredients, and dosages, to guarantee you only buy the best omega-3 supplement for your current diet.
To really maximize the health benefits, you might want to combine omega-3 with Vitamin D. Studies have shown the combination to have a positive impact on the control of serotonin synthesis and optimum brain function. That’s why we’ve also added recommendations for the best Vitamin D supplement to use alongside Ultra Omega 3.
NOW Foods Ultra Omega 3 Ingredients
Despite only having 1000 mg of fish oil, NOW Foods Ultra Omega-3 has more EPA per serving than Omegaboost, Coromega, and Kirkland Signature, amongst others.
But are you getting good value for money?
One major benefit of NOW Foods is that they sell their Omega-3 in a couple of different bottle sizes, allowing you to save money buying in bulk. At the time of writing this review, the 180-softgel bottle was on sale for $0.12 per serving. That makes it less than half the price of Coromega Omega-3, but with more EPA and DHA.
However, NOW Foods has just 1000 mg of fish oil per serving, which is half the amount you’ll find in Dr.Tobias Omega 3. So are you getting a high enough dose to see the full benefits?
How much EPA and DHA do I really need?
Newly released American Heart Association guidelines recommend at least 900 mg per day of EPA and DHA, which is an amount shown to benefit mortality rates in patients with coronary disease.
A 20% reduction in overall mortality and a 45% reduction in sudden death after 3.5 years was reported in a GISSI trial. This was based on subjects with preexisting coronary heart disease, given 850 mg per day of EPA and DHA.
A separate set of data from the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial in the US found similar results. Over 10.5 years, higher intakes of fish-derived omega-3 fatty acids were associated with a reduction in mortality from coronary heart disease.

Ultra Omega-3 vs. Viva Naturals Omega-3
What sizes are available?
With a serving size of 1 softgel, each bottle provides you with either 90 or 180 servings. Following the recommended daily dose of 2 softgels should give you enough for up to 3 months use.
At the time of writing this review, the best value for money comes from the bottle of 180 softgels. Each serving was priced at $0.12, compared to $0.13 per serving for the bottle of 90 softgels.
For a supplement with twice the fish oil (2000 mg) but slightly less EPA, Nature Made Fish Oil is your best option. It was also slightly more affordable ($0.11 per serving) when we wrote our review.
